Option A: The Burj Khalifa in Dubai is the tallest tower on earth today, standing at 828 meters.  Ignoring wind resistance and terminal velocities, how fast would an object be going if it fell off the roof of the building?  Additionally, how long would the fall last?  Answer this question in 5 sentences or less and share your work with me on Google Docs.

Option B: Write a 2 page essay about Galileo's experiment at the Leaning Tower of Pisa and how it changed physics.  Share your work with me on Google Docs after you are finished.

To help you all prepare for the ELA exam, we are going to review some basic ELA concepts.  Today, you will need to fill out a quick survey about distinguishing between facts and opinions.  Remember, a fact is a piece of information about circumstances or events that have occurred, while an opinion is a personal belief or judgment.  Look for key phrases like "I think" or "I believe" to tip you off on opinions.  After you have completed this survey, you need to continue with your First in Math work.  Your goal today is to get to 200 stickers!

Good luck!

Today you will receieve your username and password for First in Math.  In addition to being great practice for the state test, the First in Math site has some pretty fun games with a chance to win prizes.  For every 100 stickers you earn, you will receive one ticket in a weekly lottery.  The weekly winners will receive a prize from Ms. Miriam and will be entered in a final drawing to win an iPod Nano!  I will give you your login information today, and I expect you to complete at least 50 stickers in class.  Good luck!

Here is an interesting video with some statistics about global internet use.  Given that you are learning about scale in math class, this seems appropriate.

By this Thursday you need to have completed lessons 1,2, and 3 on typingweb.com, covering the home row, top row, and bottom row of keys.  Remember to practice proper hand position to improve your speed.

  1. only sixth graders may participate

  3. the fastest words per minute score on the typingweb test will receive a gift certificate to the store of their choosing in the amount of their score (example: 65 wpm= 65 dollars!)
  4. in the event of a tie, accuracy will determine the winner.
