J. Wesley Harder 7M

I grew up on Long Island and graduated from Harborfields High School. Following high school I attended Indiana University and earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration degree with concentrations in management, entrepreneurship, and legal studies. Before teaching, I had the pleasure to work on redesigning the Shamu show for SeaWorld, working with Disney to promote the movie Chicken Little, and I served as the assistant company manager for A Tale of Two Cities while it was preparing for Broadway. I then earned a Masters degree in math education from the City College of New York through the New York City Teaching Fellows. Prior to teaching at Archimedes Academy, I taught 7, 8, and 9th grade math in Spanish Harlem. When not teaching, I enjoy traveling and recently had the opportunity to volunteer in Haiti following the earthquake.

Nathaniel Baker 6M/S

Nathaniel Baker was born on a chilly afternoon in Boston MA.

I have grown up in the New England area. While I have traveled to many countries and continents, I always miss my home.

I come from a long line of oyster farmers and in the picture I am on my way to the south forty to check the summers harvest. Later that day I branded the young oysters to make sure that they did not get lost in our cruelty free, free range, environmentally sustainable oyster beds.

I enjoy sailing, beach combing, and almost anything aquatic. (I feel this gives me an advantage as a group leader for Cousteau House)

Some of my favorite moments have been in the outdoors.

I would love to return to Norway and see Thor Heyerdahl's museum again.

I like Reggae Music, Bluegrass Banjo, Mod Ska and some Gregorian Choral pieces.

My educational philosophy tends toward a whole child, whole world, environmental education. I think that every experience can be a learning experience and not all education happens in a classroom. There is as much value in learning to stud a wall or bake a cake as to the elegant solution of a geometric proof; to master these acts one must know math.

I am pleased to have the opportunity to share my experiences and travels with my students, and learn from their travels and experiences equally as well.

Education is a fire to be kindled, not a bucket to be filled.
